Sedation Dentistry

If a child exhibits increased anxiety or fear, Dr. Ramirez may recommend additional methods to relieve these feelings during future appointments. These methods may include:

Nitrous oxide

Dr. Ramirez may suggest the use of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) in addition to all the other techniques to help calm the anxious child. Nitrous oxide is a very safe gas that will help a child cope with the noise of the suction, the hand piece, and the discomfort from keeping his or her mouth open. It will also increase your child’s pain threshold and make time pass more quickly.

General anesthesia

We offer in-office general anesthesia, provided by a Pediatric Board Certified Anesthesiologist, when children are still uncooperative after trying the above techniques. Also, children under three years of age or with special needs often require general anesthesia if they need dental care. For more information you can refer to the following link: www.drtarg.com.

This procedure allows your child’s doctor to provide a variety of dental treatments safely and comfortably for patients who experience anxiety when visiting the dentist. These are some of the benefits:

  • No memory of undergoing the procedure
  • No sense of time while under sedation
  • No sense of smell or sound
  • No fear or anxiety during treatment
